Biography Mizufune, Rokushū (1912 - 1980)

In 1936 Mizufune Rokushū graduated from the sculpture department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, where he had also studied printmaking with Hiratsuka Un'ichi. Four years before, in 1932, he had been one of the founding members of Shin Hanga Shūdan - other founding members had been a.o. Ono Tadashige and Fujimaki Yoshio. So in the 1930s he was in the middle of the Sōsaku Hanga art scene. Still, in Japan he is still mainly known as a sculptor. After WWII, and certainly after a two-year stay in USA (1961-62), he developed a style of his own, quite unlike the works he had made in 1930s.
