Biography Kobayashi, Asaji (1898 - 1939)

Born in Nagano prefecture, Kobayashi Asaji was trained as an eye doctor: in 1921 he graduated at Kanazawa Medical School. In the twenties he started making woodblock prints and exhibited with the Nihon Sôsaku Hanga Kyôkai.
In 1932 he opened a practice as an eye doctor in Nagano, but he continued making woodblock prints, contributing to various print portfolios and magazines. His two careers were cut short by his suicide in 1939: he jumped off a suspension bridge, then reported to be the highest in Asia. His print for the series 100 Views of New Japan was published posthumously. Also in 1939 the Nihon Hanga Kyôkai, of which he was a member, organized a memorial exhibition.
