Biography Kozaki, Kan (1942 - )

Kozaki Kan was born in Kumamoto Prefecture in 1942. In 1966 he graduated from the sculpture department at the Pacific School of Art. Between 1960-1966 he exhibited in the Nagasaki Prefectural Exhibitions and in 1978 and 1979 he won the grand prize at the Nichidô Exhibition. He is very well known in Japan.
In 1983 he was commissioned to make a series named "Gassho" commemorating the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Kozaki Kan has a museum devoted to his works, Kan Art Gallery, in Nagasaki. In 1988 Kozaki Kan started the series "Santôka" (illustrating the poems (mainly haiku) by the Buddhist monk Santôka Taneka (1882-1940)). In 2001 he had an international solo exhibition showing his works in six cities in Germany and Switzerland.
