Biography Katō, Shinmei (1910 - 1988)

Katō Shinmei (also known as Katō Shunmei) was born in Nagoya and studied under Nakamura Gakuryo. He is first and foremost known as a painter of women. He was a regular exhibitor with the Teiten and Nitten and won a prize there in 1948, later becoming a judge of this prestigious organization. He also won numerous other prizes throughout his career. He is also known for a limited number of woodblock prints he made between 1945-1955.
