Biography Hazama, Inosuke (1895 - 1977)

Hazama Inosuke was born in Tokyo, and already in 1912 some of his paintings and watercolours were exhibited. From 1921 to 1929, and from 1933 to 1935 he studied in France, the second period with Henri Matisse. In the 1920s and the 1930s he made both woodblock prints and lithographs.
After the war, in 1949, he became assistant professor in the Western-style painting division of the Tokyo University of Arts, but already in 1950 he left for France again. On his return to Japan he mainly occupied himself with pottery and porcelain decoration. His woodblock prints especially show the influence of the time he spent in France.
