Biography Hamanishi, Katsunori (1949 - )

Hamanishi Katsunori was born in Hokkaido in 1949. He graduated from Tokai University in 1973. He spent time as a visiting artist at the Cleveland Institute of Art, and in 1987 he spent a year studying at the University of Pennsylvania. Later still he became visiting professor at the University of Alberta.
In 2004 he had a major exhibition at the Worcester Art Museum together with Hamaguchi Yozo, who like him excels in the difficult genre of the mezzotint, a drypoint technique, which is very demanding and difficult to do really well. His earlier mezzotints depict shapes - branches, ropes and wooden objects presented in three-dimensional form on paper. His recent works include bright colours an gold and silver foil.
