Biography Gekko, Ogata (1859 - 1920)

Ogata Gekko was largely self-taught, and that may explain the fact that he cannot be easily classified, and also that his style is instantly recognizable. He is a fine painter, as well as a very capable printmaker. His work was in great demand from the 1890s onward. He was a prolific artist; he contributed many illustrations to ehon and magazines, and his best-known print series is One hundred views of Mt. Fuji, a selection from which won a gold medal at St. Louis World's Fair in 1904.
