Biography Ishizaki, Shigetoshi (1901 - 1999)

Born on Nobutsuna Island, a remote island off the coast of Matsuyama City, Ehime prefecture, Ishizaki Shigetoshi moved to Tokyo and started making prints in about 1921. Later he joined the Kitsutsuki-kai group led by Hiratsuka Un'ichi. He was a fairly well-known artist in the 1930s and a member of the Nihon Hanga Kyōkai from 1932. He contributed to Hanga, ánd he contributed a print, Miyajima, to the important series Shin Nihon hyakkei - 100 Views of new Japan in November 1940. Around 1943 he moved back to the island where he had been born, and after that he worked independently, unconnected to any Tokyo art group.
