Biography Tomimoto, Kenkichi (1886 - 1963)

After having studied at the Design department of the Tokyo School of Fine Art Tomomoto Kenkichi went to England in 1908 in order to study the work of William Morris. There he met Minami Kunzo (1883-1950), and together they pioneered self-printed and self-carved woodblock prints on their return to Japan in 1911. Then he also became deeply involved in ceramics (influenced by both Bernard Leach and Yanagi Sōetsu), and though he kept making woodblock prints the rest of his artistic career his main achievements were in the field of porcelain. In 1944 he became a professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, in 1950 a professor at the Kyoto City College of Fine Arts. In 1955 he was made the first Living National Treasure.
