Biography Kamisaka, Sekka (1866 - 1942)

Kamisaka Sekka (1866-1942) is considered one of the greatest Japanese artists of the first half of the twentieth century. He was the final master of a historic Japanese artistic tradition known as Rimpa, founded in the early seventeenth century, and through his collaborative work in many media and as a proponent of the development of modern crafts, he is known as the father of modern design in Japan.
Among collectors of 20th century woodblock prints he is mainly known for his woodblock print albums A Thousand Butterflies - Chō Senrui, published in 1903, and World of Things - Momoyogusa, 1909, both published by Unsōdō in Kyoto.
Also as a painter he has left a very attractive oeuvre.
