Biography Oda, Mayumi (1941 - )

Mayumi Oda was born in Tokyo, on June 2, 1941. After girls' high school she entered the National Academy of Art in Tokyo. In 1962 she married a young American Harvard graduate, and in the 70s she started her artistic career, while raising a growing family in New England. Gradually she became involved in the women's liberation movement, and the Buddhism of her youth started playing a more important role. Also Zen started playing its part. In 1978 she separated from her husband.
Her artistic career gained momentum, and she has had many one-woman shows. You might want to visit her website: www.mayumioda.net. There she is characterized as : "The Japanese Matisse".
