Kaoru Kawano's first exhibition was with the Nihon Hanga Kyōkai in 1944. Soon after he was taken prisoner of war in Siberia. Unlike many of his fellow POWs he was able to return to Japan, where he resumed exhibiting in 1949. From that time until his death he was a very successful artist with many solo exhibitions abroad. Semi-abstract woodcuts of girls are his main subject.
